SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE

Multiple feedback processes, including stellar feedback, AGN activity, and environmental effects, play a fundamental role in shaping galaxy evolution. However, these mechanisms are often studied in isolation, despite their combined and interconnected impact on the interstellar medium and galaxy evolution.

This conference aims to bring together experts working across observational and theoretical studies of the Milky Way, external galaxies, extreme environments, and active galactic nuclei to build a unified view of feedback processes. In particular, it aims to address how different feedback mechanisms interact, what observational signatures they produce, how they can be consistently implemented in simulations, and how they collectively regulate galaxy evolution. The programme is built around five questions:

  • Coupling of feedback mechanisms: When and how do AGN, stellar and environmental feedback interact?

  • Degeneracies in feedback diagnostics: Under what conditions do different processes produce similar observational signatures?

  • Multi-phase gas response: How do the different phases of the interstellar medium respond to, and take part in, feedback?

  • Feedback across scales: How does it propagate from small-scale ISM physics out to the circumgalactic medium?

  • Modelling mixed feedback: How should current and future simulations implement and combine multiple feedback channels?

The scientific programme is therefore organised in five blocks:

1. Star formation and stellar feedback in the Milky Way
2. Feedback in external galaxies
3. Feedback in extreme galactic environments
4. Active galactic nuclei feedback
5. Connecting observations and simulations across scales

Invited speakers:

Ashley Barnes (ESO)
Amélie Saintonge (MPIfR)
Francesca Fragkoudi (Durham University)
Anelise Audibert (IAC)
Ana Duarte-Cabral (Cardiff University)

This conference aims to create a welcoming environment, where scientists from all career-stages come together to discuss, generate new ideas and bring together theory and observations. Researchers of every background are welcome, from PhD students to senior scientists.

Navigating Galaxies 2027 is the closing international scientific conference of the ExGal-Twin project.
